Where the application goes

Applications go to the county, not the state. That is why this site is organised by county: the deadline printed on a state page is the rule, and several counties do not follow it.

Florida calls it Homestead Exemption. The name is worth knowing before you go looking for the form.

Who qualifies

When someone owns property and makes it his or her permanent residence (or the permanent residence of a dependent), the owner may be eligible for a homestead exemption that decreases the property's taxable value by as much as $50,000 (the first $25,000 applies to all taxing authorities; a second $25,000, on value between $50,000-$75,000, excludes school district taxes). Additional exemptions exist for seniors (65+, low income, F.S. 196.075), disabled persons/veterans, and surviving spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty (F.S. 196.081(6)). Homesteaded property also benefits from the Save Our Homes assessment growth cap.

Florida homestead exemption questions

When is the homestead exemption deadline in Florida?

What is the exemption called in Florida?
It is called Homestead Exemption. The name matters when you are searching: an application filed under the wrong programme name is the most avoidable delay there is.

Not reliably. We hold 12 counties in Florida and read each one's deadline from that county's own page rather than copying the state rule down. Where a county's own words differ, its page says so.
Which law creates the Florida exemption?
Fla. Stat. § 196.031. We cite it so you can read the rule rather than take our word for it — nothing on this site is legal advice.
Is there one Florida application form?
Yes — the state publishes one at https://floridarevenue.com/property/Documents/dr501.pdf. Some counties still want their own version of it, so check the county page before you fill anything in.
