Where the application goes

Applications go to the county, not the state. That is why this site is organised by county: the deadline printed on a state page is the rule, and several counties do not follow it.

Minnesota calls it Homestead Classification. The name is worth knowing before you go looking for the form.

Who qualifies

To qualify as a homestead, property must be residential real estate that is occupied and used as a homestead by its owner, who must be a Minnesota resident, and it must serve as the owner's permanent residence (with limited exceptions for relatives occupying the property, active military deployment, or nursing-home residence). The county assessor may require proof of the facts on which homestead classification is based and may require re-application at any time to verify continued eligibility. Minnesota also offers a Special Agricultural Homestead and a Special Homestead Classification for blind or disabled owners, administered separately from the general Homestead Classification.

Why there are no Minnesota county pages

Hennepin County measured 10–100 searches a month against 100–1K for Minnesota as a whole, so the demand sits at state level. Minnesota also has no single statewide application form — each county issues its own — which is a second reason the state page is the honest unit here.

Minnesota homestead exemption questions

When is the homestead exemption deadline in Minnesota?
December 31 — the source we read puts it this way: “Homestead applications must be filed by December 31 of the year of occupancy to qualify for homestead treatment.” We read it on 2026-08-04.
What is the exemption called in Minnesota?
It is called Homestead Classification. The name matters when you are searching: an application filed under the wrong programme name is the most avoidable delay there is.
Where do I file in Minnesota?
Applications go to the county, not the state. That is why this site is organised by county: the deadline printed on a state page is the rule, and several counties do not follow it. The state's own page is https://www.revenue.state.mn.us/homestead-classification.
Who qualifies in Minnesota?
In outline: To qualify as a homestead, property must be residential real estate that is occupied and used as a homestead by its owner, who must be a Minnesota resident, and it must serve as the owner's permanent residence (with limited exceptions for relatives occupying the property, active military deployment, or nursing-home residence). Does Minnesota have one deadline for the whole state?
We have not tested that county by county in Minnesota. This page carries the state rule as published; a county's own office can still describe it differently, and it is worth a call before you rely on a date.
Which law creates the Minnesota exemption?
Minn. Stat. § 273.124. We cite it so you can read the rule rather than take our word for it — nothing on this site is legal advice.
Is there one Minnesota application form?
No single statewide form that we could source. Applications are made on forms the local office issues. Use the form linked from your county's page.
