New York Homestead Exemption: Deadline & How to Apply (2026)
New York’s homestead exemption has no fixed annual deadline for STAR credit registration — homeowners register once with NY State (a late registration is still accepted for up to 3 years after that year's income-tax filing deadline). The legacy, now-closed STAR exemption instead used each locality's 'taxable status date,' except NYC which allowed filing through March 15., according to New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
We'll accept your registration for up to three years from the income tax filing deadline for the year covered by the credit. For example, to claim the STAR credit for 2024, you must register by April 15, 2028.
Where the application goes
Applications go to the state, not to a local office. There is one process and one deadline, which is why there are no county pages here.
New York calls it School Tax Relief (STAR) Program — STAR credit (for new/current homebuyers) and STAR exemption (legacy, closed to new applicants since 2015). The name is worth knowing before you go looking for the form.
Who qualifies
Basic STAR has no age restriction and requires combined income of the owners and owners' resident spouses of $500,000 or less for the STAR credit (or $250,000 or less for the legacy STAR exemption, which is closed to anyone who purchased their home after 2015). Enhanced STAR requires at least one resident owner to be 65 or older as of December 31 of the benefit year, with a combined owner/resident-spouse income limit of $110,750 or less for 2026 benefits ($113,550 for 2027). New homeowners must register directly with the NY State Department of Taxation and Finance (via the online Homeowner Benefit Portal) to receive the STAR credit as a check or direct deposit; they can no longer apply for the STAR exemption through their local assessor.
Where New York homeowners file, and why there are no county pages here
New York is not organised through a local assessor for new applicants: you register once with the state for the STAR credit rather than filing with a county. There is less on a county page here than anywhere else, because the step that matters is a state one.
New York homestead exemption questions
- When is the homestead exemption deadline in New York?
- No fixed annual deadline for STAR credit registration — homeowners register once with NY State (a late registration is still accepted for up to 3 years after that year's income-tax filing deadline). The legacy, now-closed STAR exemption instead used each locality's 'taxable status date,' except NYC which allowed filing through March 15. — the source we read puts it this way: “We'll accept your registration for up to three years from the income tax filing deadline for the year covered by the credit. For example, to claim the STAR credit for 2024, you must register by April 15, 2028.” We read it on 2026-08-04.
- What is the exemption called in New York?
- It is called School Tax Relief (STAR) Program — STAR credit (for new/current homebuyers) and STAR exemption (legacy, closed to new applicants since 2015). The name matters when you are searching: an application filed under the wrong programme name is the most avoidable delay there is.

- Does New York have one deadline for the whole state?
- We have not tested that county by county in New York. This page carries the state rule as published; a county's own office can still describe it differently, and it is worth a call before you rely on a date.
- Which law creates the New York exemption?
- N.Y. Real Property Tax Law § 425. We cite it so you can read the rule rather than take our word for it — nothing on this site is legal advice.
- Is there one New York application form?
- No single statewide form that we could source. Applications are made on forms the local office issues. Ask New York State Department of Taxation and Finance which form it issues — that office is the one that publishes it.
